Critique of Optical Negative Refraction Superlensing

چکیده
Has the ten-year old quest for the optical superlens, based on Veselago’s hypothesis of negative refraction, been a chimera? We argue that Pendry’s alternative prescription of the silver superlens is nothing more than an application of the natural phenomenon of surface plasmon resonance that occurs in the noble metal films. This phenomenon does not predict the reality of Veselago’s negative refractive index materials. We give a simple explanation of how this resonance achieves a field intensity enhancement at the interface of silver and air without involving the concept of negative refraction. § Corresponding author: [email protected]

Ultra low-loss, isotropic optical negative-index metamaterial based on hybrid metal-semiconductor nanowires
Recently, many fascinating properties predicted for metamaterials (negative refraction, superlensing, electromagnetic cloaking,…) were experimentally demonstrated. Unfortunately, the best achievements have no direct translation to the optical domain, without being burdened by technological and conceptual difficulties. Of particular importance within the realm of optical negative-index metamater...
متن کاملAll-angle negative refraction without negative effective index
Negative refraction of electromagnetic waves in ‘‘lefthanded materials’’ has become of interest recently because it is the foundation for a variety of novel phenomena. In particular, it has been suggested that negative refraction leads to a superlensing effect that can potentially overcome the diffraction limit inherent in conventional lenses. These phenomena have been described in the context ...
متن کاملTunable superlensing by a mechanically controlled photonic crystal
We investigated negative refraction and subwavelength imaging by a mechanically tunable photonic crystal (PC) slab. A honeycomb-structured PC composed of a silicon–polyimide membrane was used because it exhibits isotropic negative refraction within the second photonic band. Using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method, we demonstrated focusing properties of the PC lenses at various fre...
متن کاملSuper-resolution Imaging of the Graded Photonic Crystal with Negative Refraction
In this paper, super-resolution imaging and negative refraction by a two-dimensional (2D) triangular lattices graded photonic crystal (GPC) were studied. The graded photonic crystal (GPC) was obtained by varying the radius in each row so that its effective refractive index changes along the transverse direction. By using Plane Wave Expansion (PWE) method and Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD)...
متن کاملThree-dimensional photonic metamaterials at optical frequencies.
Metamaterials are artificially structured media with unit cells much smaller than the wavelength of light. They have proved to possess novel electromagnetic properties, such as negative magnetic permeability and negative refractive index. This enables applications such as negative refraction, superlensing and invisibility cloaking. Although the physical properties can already be demonstrated in...
